WHAT IS AN ISRC CODE?

An ISRC is a unique ID for a single recording. It's how streaming services, radio monitors and royalty organizations know which song was played.

    WHAT AN ISRC LOOKS LIKE

It's 12 characters: a country code, a registrant code, the year, and a unique number. For example, a code starting with US was registered in the United States.

    HOW TO GET AN ISRC

The easiest way is through your distributor, which usually assigns codes automatically. You can also register as an ISRC manager through your country's official ISRC agency and issue your own codes.

    ONE CODE PER RECORDING

A radio edit, a remix and the original each need their own ISRC. Keep the same code when you re-upload the same recording, or its play history can be split.

    ISRC VS. UPC

An ISRC identifies a recording. A UPC identifies a release, like a single, EP or album. A release with five songs has one UPC and five ISRCs.

    COMMON QUESTIONS

    Is an ISRC code free?

Usually yes through your distributor. Registering directly with an ISRC agency may have a fee depending on your country.

Do I need an ISRC for radio?

Many stations and radio monitoring services use ISRCs to track plays, so it's best to have one before you pitch.
