HOW TO WRITE A POP SONG
Pop songs are built to be remembered after one listen. Here's the structure and habits that make that happen.
START WITH THE HOOK
Write the chorus first. Find one phrase that sums up the song and a melody that's easy to sing back. Repeat it.
USE A PROVEN STRUCTURE
Verse, pre-chorus, chorus, verse, pre-chorus, chorus, bridge, final chorus is a common pop structure. The pre-chorus builds tension so the chorus lands harder.
KEEP IT TIGHT
Short intros, a chorus within the first minute, and a total length around three minutes keep listeners in. Cut anything that doesn't serve the hook.
WRITE SPECIFIC LYRICS
Simple words, one clear idea, and a few concrete details make lyrics feel real. Say it the way you'd say it out loud.
