HOW TO GET SIGNED TO A RECORD LABEL

Labels rarely sign artists from cold emails. They sign artists who are already building momentum. Here's what that means in practice and how to get on their radar.

    WHAT LABELS LOOK FOR

A&R reps look for proof that people already care: growing streams, engaged followers, shows that draw a crowd, press, and radio play. Great songs matter, but labels want to see an audience reacting to them.

They also look for consistency. An artist who releases every few weeks and keeps improving is easier to invest in than one with a single viral moment.

FIND LABELS THAT WANT ARTISTS LIKE YOU

Start with independent labels, not majors. Look at the credits of artists in your genre who are a step or two ahead of you and note which labels released their music.

Check each label's website and social pages for demo submission rules. Many say clearly whether they accept demos and how.

    HOW TO PITCH A LABEL

Send one short email to the right person: who you are, your genre, one streaming link to your best song, and two or three numbers or credits that show momentum.

Follow up once after two weeks. Then keep releasing, because a second email with new progress lands better than repeated chasing.

RED FLAGS IN A RECORD DEAL

Be careful with any label that asks you to pay upfront to be signed, wants ownership of your masters forever with nothing in return, or pressures you to sign quickly.

Always have a music lawyer review a contract before you sign it.

DO YOU EVEN NEED A LABEL?

Many independent artists now distribute, promote and earn without a label. A deal makes sense when a label brings money, reach or a team you can't get yourself.

Either way, the steps are the same: release, grow and collect credits. A weekly radio play and a written review are credits you can name in every pitch.

    COMMON QUESTIONS

    Do record labels accept demos?

Some do and many don't. Check each label's website for its demo policy before sending anything.

How many streams do you need to get signed?

There's no fixed number. Labels care more about growth and engagement than one total, and it differs by genre and label size.

Does radio play help you get signed?

Radio credits are one more sign of momentum to mention in a pitch. Independent Radio FM gives members a guaranteed Saturday play and a written DJ review every week for $49 a month.
