HOW TO GET YOUR RAP SONG ON THE RADIO

Rap gets more submissions than any other genre, which means most of it never gets heard. Here is how to give your track a real shot at airplay, and how to lock in a play every week.

Mix for the radio, not for your headphones

Rap lives or dies on the low end, and radio flattens it. Get the track mastered so the vocal sits clearly above the 808 at low volume. Play it through a phone speaker and a car before you send it. If you cannot make out every line, a music director will not fight for it.

    Have a clean version ready

This is the number one reason rap submissions get skipped. Most stations cannot air explicit language at all. Make a clean radio edit with the same energy as the original, no long silences, and send both versions.

    Keep it tight

Two and a half to three and a half minutes is the sweet spot. A long intro or a slow build gets cut. Lead with the hook or get there fast.

    Pitch shows, not stations

College and community stations run specific hip-hop shows with their own hosts. Find those shows, send to that host, and mention an artist they already play who sounds like you. A blanket email to a station address goes nowhere.

    COMMON QUESTIONS

How do I get my rap song on the radio?

Master the track so the vocal cuts through, prepare a clean radio edit, keep it under about three and a half minutes, and send it to specific hip-hop shows rather than a general station address. Independent Radio FM plays every member's song on its Saturday shows for $49 a month.

Do radio stations play explicit rap songs?

Most will not. Broadcast stations face fines for explicit language, so a clean radio edit is required. Always send both the clean version and the original.

Can an unsigned rapper get radio airplay?

Yes, on independent, college, community and online stations. Commercial FM rap rotations are mostly label driven, so those are the wrong first target.
