HOW TO GET YOUR CLASSICAL MUSIC ON THE RADIO

Independent composers, soloists and ensembles can pitch classical music to radio without a label. The key is a strong recording, clear credits and a show that welcomes your kind of work. Here is how to prepare a classical radio submission.

Want a weekly place for your music? Explore Independent Radio FM's full artist membership: guaranteed weekly radio play, a monthly article, an artist community, your own link-in-bio page and opportunities to submit to playlists, other radio stations and song placements. Outside placements are not guaranteed.

Match the work to the program

Classical radio covers many sounds. Chamber music, choral works, solo piano and new compositions may fit different programs. Listen to recent episodes and read the show's submission page. For an original work, look for programs that feature living composers or new music rather than assuming every classical station accepts submissions.

Choose a complete piece or movement

Start with one work or movement that stands well on its own. Include its exact length. Do not cut a piece just to fit a pop-song format. Ask the host about time limits, and label any excerpt clearly so listeners are not told they are hearing the full work.

Check the quiet parts as carefully as the loud ones

Listen for room noise, clipped peaks and sudden level changes. Quiet passages should still be clear on everyday speakers. Keep the natural rise and fall of the performance instead of making every moment equally loud. Follow the station's audio format rules when you send the final file.

Give the host accurate composer and performer credits

Include the composer, work title, movement name, performers, conductor if there is one, and release date. Add an opus or catalog number when relevant. If names are hard to pronounce, include a short pronunciation note. Make sure you have permission to share the recording; an old composition does not automatically make a new recording free to use.

Tell the story without a long essay

Write two or three sentences about the work and why it fits the show. Mention a premiere, a new release or what inspired your composition when it is relevant. Link to your artist bio and one recording. A clear pitch helps the host introduce your music without digging through a long press release.
