How to Promote Your Music in 2026 (The Stuff That Actually Works)

Most promotion advice is written for artists who already have a team. This is the version for an artist with a phone, a finished song, and no budget. It is not glamorous, but it is what actually moves the needle.

Start with one song, not your whole catalog

Pick your single best song and put every bit of energy behind it for six to eight weeks. Spreading attention across ten songs means none of them get enough pushes to matter. One song that keeps showing up in front of the same people beats ten songs that show up once.

Get radio play, because it still opens doors

Radio is not dead for independent artists. College, community, and online stations play unsigned music every day, and every spin is a credit you can put in your next pitch. Being able to say a station played your song changes how the next station, blog, or playlist curator reads your email. Submit properly: mastered file, clean version, short pitch, the station's own submission route.

Post the song, not the announcement

Short video is still the cheapest reach there is, but nobody shares a post that says new song out now. Post the song itself: the hook, the best line, the part that hits. Fifteen seconds of the actual record, three or four times a week, from different angles. If a clip does nothing, the problem is the clip, not the algorithm. Make another one.

Playlists are a follow up move, not a first move

Playlist pitching works better once there is something to point to. A curator who can see radio spins and posts that are getting reactions has a reason to take a chance on you. Pitch independent curators in your genre, keep the message to two sentences, and never pay for a guaranteed playlist spot. Paid placement on fake playlists gets songs pulled.

Turn every win into the next win

This is the part most artists skip. When a show plays your song, post it and thank the host. When a playlist adds you, tell your listeners. Screenshot everything and put it on one page you can link to. Promotion compounds: each small result makes the next ask easier, but only if people can see it happened.

Get feedback before you spend anything

Before you put money behind a song, find out if strangers react to it the way you hope. Ask people who hear a lot of music, not friends. If the hook lands late or the mix fights the vocal, promotion just tells more people the song is not ready. Fix the record first.

What a weekly plan looks like

Submit the song to five stations or shows every week. Post three or four clips of the record. Pitch two or three curators. Reply to everyone who engages. That is a few hours a week, and done for three months straight it outperforms almost any one time paid campaign. Consistency is the whole trick.
