How to Get Your Music on the Radio Without a Label
A label used to be the only way onto the radio. Not anymore. Independent, college, community, and online stations play unsigned artists every week. Here is how to get your music on the radio on your own.
Start with independent radio, not commercial FM
Commercial FM mostly plays songs backed by labels and paid promotion. Independent stations pick their own music, so an unsigned song is exactly what they are looking for. Build your first radio credits there.
Make the song radio ready
Radio needs a mixed and mastered file and a clean edit if there is explicit language. Name the file Artist Name - Song Title and include your songwriter and producer credits.
Pitch shows, not inboxes
Find the specific shows and hosts that already play music like yours. A short personal note to the right host beats a mass email to a hundred stations.
Be consistent
One song is a shot. A new song every few weeks builds recognition with hosts and listeners. The artists who get played are usually the ones who keep showing up.
Skip the waiting
Independent Radio FM is an independent station built for unsigned artists. For $49 a month you submit one song a week, it plays on a Saturday show, and you get a written DJ review. See the full guide on how to get your music on the radio at independentradio.fm/get-my-music-on-the-radio.
